인공지능 통역기가 통역사를 대체할까?

인공지능 테크분야를 통역하는 내게 이 문제는 아이러니하다.

특히 인공지능 언어모델 쪽 전문가님께서 오시면 가끔 통역사를 안쓰럽게 쳐다보기도 한다. 

나는 내 직업을 앗아갈 적을 알아야 한다는 생각에 공부를 시작했다.
공부의 결과 지금은 적보다는 나를 도와주는 동지의 개념에 가깝다는 결론이다.
전에는 반드시 원어민에게 도움을 받아서 해야만 했던 번역을 이제 간단하게 체크해서 혼자서 마무리 할 수 있다.

물론 아직 완벽한 원어민의 뉘앙스를 구사하기란 어려운 일이지만...

 

 

통역기가 아직 인간을 대체하기 어려운 이유는, 영어 특유의 비꼬기, Sarcasm, 때문이 아닐까... 
"You're the best"

라는 말이 순수히 '정말 최고예요'라는 말일수도 있지만, 

'그래, 너 잘났다'로 해석할 수도 있기 때문이다.

우리나라의 말에서도 '미쳤다'라는 말이 항상 부정을 뜻하지도 않듯이..

아직까지는 기계가 사람의 감수성을 따라가지는 못한 것 같다. (아직까지는...)
말하는 사람마다 발음도 억양도 각양각색이고, 문법을 따르지 않는 문장들도 유추해서 통역사는 빠르고 능청스럽게 대처해야 한다.
지금까지 통역기의 성능을 본다면 당장 내일의 걱정거리는 아닌 것 같다. 시리도 알렉사도 심지어 챗GPT를 활용단 다른 통역기도 한번에 자연스럽게 말을 알아듣지는 못한다.

촉각을 다투는 회의의 현장에서 통역기가 알아들을 수 있도로 말을 두세 번 또박또박 알아듣게 하는 게, 과연 얼마나 효율적일지도 아직까지는 의문이다. 

하지만 많은 직업들이 그렇듯이 통역기가 통역사를 대체하는건 시간의 문제일 것 같다.
어떤 미래가 펼쳐질지 대비해야 하기 때문에, 나도 더욱 열심히 미래를 공부하게 된다. 

몰려오는 그들과 적이아닌 동반자가 되기 위해 부지런히 통역기의 성능을 시험해 보고 있다.

 

한편으로, 나를 고용해주시는 클라이언트의 입장에서 보자면, 단순한 언어의 통역이 아니라 문화나 사회 전반적인 이해를 하고 있는 한국인을 고용하시는 경우도 있다. 유려한 언어가 필요했다면 미국에서 나고 자란 사람에게 부탁하겠지만, 어떤 클라이언트는 문화적 이해도가 높은 한국 출신 통역사를 선호하시는 경우가 있다. 특히 한국에 사업적 부탁을 하러 오시는 분 같은 경우는 더더욱 정중하고 예의 바른 언어를 사용해 최대한 소기의 성과를 이루고 가시기를 바라기 때문일 것이다.

 

물론 경제적 관점에서 본다면 기계를 쓰는게 더 합리적이어서 어느정도의 기계적 실수는 넘어갈 수도 있다. 또한 이제 통역사에게는 통역기보다는 나아아 한다는 압박감이 생겼다. 그것이 나를 더욱 성장하게 하는 원동력이라면 적극적으로 통역기의 위협을 받아들이고 싶다. 나는 나의 가치를 세상에 증명하기 위해서 더더욱 노력할 것이므로..

Will AI Interpreters Replace Interpreters?

 

It is ironic for me, as an interpreter in the field of artificial intelligence tech. Especially when experts in artificial intelligence language models visit, they sometimes look at interpreters with a sense of embarrassment.

I started studying with the belief that I need to know when my job might be taken away. The result of my studies is that now I feel closer to the concept of a comrade who helps me rather than an opponent. I can now handle translations that used to require assistance from a native speaker, checking and completing them on my own.

Of course, mastering the nuances of a native speaker is still a challenging task, but...

The reason why interpretation devices are difficult to replace might be due to the unique aspects of English, such as irony and sarcasm. The phrase "You're the best" could mean pure praise, but it could also be interpreted as "Sure, you're great."

Just as the phrase "미쳤다" in Korean doesn't always convey negativity...

Machines still seem unable to fully grasp human sensibilities. Each speaker has a unique pronunciation and intonation, and interpreters must quickly and adeptly handle sentences that don't follow grammar rules. Based on the current performance, the worry for tomorrow doesn't seem immediate. Even Siri, Alexa, and other translation devices utilizing ChatGPT can't understand speech naturally in one go (at least not yet).

In the dynamic setting of a contentious meeting, making a machine understand speech by repeating it a couple of times may still be questionable in terms of efficiency.

However, like many professions, it seems to be only a matter of time before interpretation devices replace interpreters. To prepare for whatever future unfolds, I diligently study more about the future.

On the other hand, from the perspective of clients who hire me, some prefer to employ a Korean interpreter who not only translates language but also understands culture and society comprehensively. While fluent language skills may be needed, some clients prefer a Korean interpreter with high cultural understanding. Especially when dealing with business requests in Korea, clients might prefer someone with a deep understanding of Korean culture, hoping for more polite and culturally appropriate language use to achieve the best results.

Of course, from an economic standpoint, using machines is more rational, and some degree of mechanical errors may be overlooked. Moreover, interpreters now feel pressured to be better than interpretation devices. If that pressure serves as a driving force for my personal growth, I am willing to embrace the threat of interpretation devices actively. I will strive even harder to prove my value to the world...
