인공지능 전문 통역의 시작

나의 공식적인 통역 첫 경험은 2010년 몽골이었다.

당시 나는 건축 전공 으로서 건축봉사를 위해 학교에서 3주 동안 몽골에 머물게 되었다.

나는 친구들과 그저 벽돌을 나르고 시멘트를 바르는 봉사활동을 하며 3주를 즐겁게 보낼 줄 알았다. 그러나 뜻밖에도 학교차원의 큰 규모의  봉사활동었고 몽골의 여러 단체들과 회의를 할 일이 많았다. 당시에는 학생들 중 유일하게 해외에서 체류해 본적이 있는 학생이었기 때문에 본의 아니게 학교 대표로 통역을 하게 되었다. 지금 돌아보면 아찔한 순간들이 많았다. 통역이란걸 배워본 적도 없고 해외 경험이라곤 교환학생 전부였기 때문이다. 무척 떨리며 더듬더듬 통역을 하면서 점차 통역의 즐거움을 몸에 익혀갔다.

그때였던 것 같다. 나는 떨림이 성취감으로 변하는 순간. 

나의 영어가 실제로 유용하다는 것을 몸소 느낀 순간이었다.

한참이 지나서 2016년 경 홍콩에서 근무하던 때, 가족이나 친구가 없던 나는 퇴근 후에 재밌어 보이는 세미나에 자주 기웃거렸다.

어느 날, 인공지능에 관한 세미나가 열렸고, 거기에서 한글로 열심히 메모를 하는 멋진 여성을 보았다. 이 여성분이 향후 나의 대표가 될지도 모르는 채, 그분과 즐거운 수다를 떨었고, 그녀가 건네준 작은 명함에는 인공지능 연구를 하는 스타트업의 대표라고 써있었다.

몇 주 후, 그 대표님께서 나에게 연락이 왔다. 회사에서 홍콩 박람회에서 전시를 하는데 통역이 필요하다고 했다. 주말에 잠시 도와드려야지, 하고 갔는데, 뜻밖에도 그곳은 아시아 최대 규모의 SLUSH 전시회로 2,500개 이상의 회사와 10,000명 이상의 참가자가 참여하는 행사였다.

나는 그날 정말 몇 명의 사람들과 대화를 했는지 기억이 나지 않는다. 인공지능 기술과 전혀 관련이 없던 사람에게 영어로 인공지능을 설명하는 것은 어려운 일이였다.  그러나 그날,  수 많은 다른 테크분야의 스타트업들을 보고 거대한 기술적 전환이 다가옴을 온몸으로 느낄 수 있었다. 

이 날 이후, 나는 방향을 바꾸어 인공지능 분야로 향했고 결국은 그 분야에서의 경력을 쌓게 되었다.

그 날의 인연이 끝이 아니었다. 이후 1년 동안 홍콩에서의 생활을 마치고 캐나다로 옮겼다가 잠시 한국에 왔을때, 대표님과 함께 식사를 하게 되었다. 그 날, 함께 일해보면 어떻겠냐고 물으셨고, 한국으로 돌아온지 4일만에 새로운 회사에서 근무를 하게 되었다. 

새로운 직업은 UX디자이너. 당시에 개발하던 웹, 앱 디자인을 맡겨주셨다. 작은 기업이니만큼, 크고 작은 결정들을 대표님과 긴밀하게 협의해나가면서, 알게모르게 사업가 정신이 내안에 스며들었다. 전혀 생경한 분야였기 때문에, 살아남기 위해서 매일 일하던 공유오피스의 도서관에 출근해서 인공지능이나 테크분야, 마케팅에 대한 책을 읽어야 했다. 이때의 경험이 지금 내 삶에 중요한 기반이 되어줄지는 전혀 몰랐다. 그리고 지금까지도 이 대표님은 나에게 가장 큰 영향력을 주신 감사한 분이다. 

이렇게 나는 본격적으로 인공지능 분야에 발을 딛게 되었다. 그 회사에서 4년 이상을 근무하면서 작은 회사가 크게 성장하는 것을 목격했고, 정말 수 많은 영어 발표 기회를 얻었다. 이동안 해외 전시회도 정말 많이 갔다. 물론 여러 실수도 있었겠지만, 그 회사가 지금의 내 삶에 큰 발판이 되어준 것은 확실하다. 지금은 그 회사 밖에서 계속해서 인공지능 분야에서 공부하고 성장하며 나가고 있다.

 

 

 

My official first experience in interpretation was in Mongolia in 2010. As an architecture major, I stayed in Mongolia for about three weeks for architectural volunteer work organized by my school.

I anticipated spending the three weeks joyfully carrying bricks and applying cement for the volunteer work. However, due to the unexpectedly large scale of the activity, I had numerous meetings with various organizations in Mongolia. Since I was the only student who had lived abroad among my peers, I unintentionally became the school representative for interpretation.

It was during that time that I felt the nervousness turning into a sense of accomplishment. I realized the practical value of my English.

Around 2016, while working in Hong Kong without family or friends, I often attended interesting seminars during my free time. One day, there was a seminar on artificial intelligence, and I encountered a wonderful woman diligently taking notes in Korean. We happily chatted, laughed, and exchanged contact information, not knowing she might become the CEO in the future. Her business card indicated that she was the CEO of a small startup focused on artificial intelligence research.

A few weeks later, she contacted me. The company needed interpretation assistance for an exhibition at a Hong Kong trade show. Thinking it would be a brief weekend support, I went and discovered it was the SLUSH exhibition, the largest in Asia with over 2,500 companies and more than 10,000 attendees.

I can't recall how many people I spoke to. Explaining artificial intelligence to individuals with no prior knowledge of the technology was challenging. Nevertheless, I sensed the approach of a massive technological shift.

After that experience, I redirected my focus towards artificial intelligence and eventually shifted my career in that direction.

The connection made on that day wasn't the end. A year later, after leaving Hong Kong and living in Canada, I briefly visited Korea. During a casual meal invitation from the CEO, I decided to return to Korea. She remains the most influential figure in my life.

This marked the beginning of my active involvement in the field of artificial intelligence. During my four years at that company, I witnessed its significant growth from a small firm, gaining numerous opportunities for English presentations. Despite inevitable mistakes, it undeniably served as a significant stepping stone in my life.

Today, as I continue to study and grow in the field of artificial intelligence, that company remains the most supportive and impactful part of my journey.
